Nexium is in a class of pharmaceuticals known as proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Nexium is a common medication for GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). But recent research shows that chronic use can lead to heart attack.
Nexium prematurely ages the lining of the artery, making it less resistant to blockages that can cause a heart attack. (CircRes online May 10, 2016).
Nexium does this by affecting the gene, causing shortening of the chromosomes’ telomere.
Telomere testing is readily available.
Other PPIs such as Prilosec, Prevacid, and Dexilant have similar mechanisms of action and may lead to the same outcome. These drugs (many available OTC) have never been approved for long-term use.
